Local Area
Albanchez is just a few kilometres from the thriving town of Albox , which sits between the Sierra de los Filabres and the Sierra de los Estaciones mountain ranges on the banks of the ancient river bed of the Almanzora. Once dependent on local mining and transport Albox is surrounded by agriculture which is now the mainstay for the surrounding area although it is an important link for the transporting of the marble that is still mined in nearby areas. The name Albox is a derivative from the Moor name for At The Forest and is similar to the Spanish Al Bosque meaning the same
Albox has become the shopping centre for this area with a high quality, and variety, of shops and services available. The new sports centre with indoor pool and the outdoor Municipal pool offer sporting diversions but there are also football, tennis, and martial art clubs in the town.
There is a fairly high ex-pat populace in the area and several businesses have specifically aimed at this market but the town remains typically Spanish  and extends a friendly welcome to visitors and residents. The new motorway under development will decrease the length of time it currently takes to get to the coast but Vera playa and Garrucha are about an half an hour's drive from the town centre. San Javier, Murcia's airport, and Almeria airport are almost an equal distance from Albox and approximately an hour and a half away.
